This week marks the ninth year since the passing of Rav Ovadia Yosef zt”l, renowned Sephardi Chief Rabbi of Israel, Halachic authority, and spiritual guide of the Shas party. Over seven decades, he galvanized Sephardic Jewry to embrace their rich Jewish heritage. Rav Ovadia zt”l continues to impact the Jewish world – and by extension, your communities and students – through his legacy of Torah scholarship, communal leadership and genuine concern for others. Two programming opportunities below can bring alive the extraordinary accomplishments of Rav Ovadia zt”l and help motivate your communities and students themselves to increase their Torah study, practice chesed and assume leadership roles.

Rabbi Yaakov Moskowitz produced a new video about the life and legacy of Harav Ovadia Yosef zt”l to commemorate his upcoming yahrzeit (3 Cheshvan), through the “Growth Through Our Gedolim” project.

The project overall features short motivational clips providing a glimpse into the meaningful lives of great recent Jewish leaders. The Rav Ovadia video illustrates the Rav’s selfless dedication to strengthening the entire Jewish people – from serving as a world Jewish leader establishing schools systems and social agencies, and adjudicating Jewish law, to assisting individuals in need. Check out the engaging video below – we are certain that you will find that it is a great vehicle to inform and inspire your students.

Eight years ago, 850,000 Jews converged on the streets of Jerusalem for the biggest funeral in Israel’s history — the funeral of Rav Ovadia Yosef zt”l.  News agencies around the world covered Rav Ovadia’s passing, and recorded the highlights of the life of this great rabbi, political leader, and social revolutionary.

Few articles, however, lend more than a sentence to Rav Ovadia’s most remarkable and enduring achievement – his mastery of every area of Torah, and the dozens of volumes of Halacha that he published.  Students around the world can tap into who Rav Ovadia was via a special tribute NLE / OlamiResources Thinking Gemara class.

We are proud to present rabbis and educators around the world with a sample of Rav Ovadia’s Torah greatness – and a tool to help students experience the Torah of this giant. In the same style of our Thinking Gemara classes, we’ve prepared a Teacher’s Guide and Student’s Source Sheets of an exciting shiur on an interesting and unusual contemporary shaila: Tzaar Baalei Chaim – Is it Permitted to Watch a Bullfight?

The shiur is a tour through a teshuva of Rav Ovadia, a chance to highlight the applicability of the Torah’s wisdom to many facets of modern life, and a great way to highlight the Torah’s sensitive attitude towards animals.  As a bonus, the teshuva includes a nice section about visiting zoos.
