Ten days ago, 850,000 Jews converged on the streets of Jerusalem for the biggest funeral in Israel’s history — the funeral of Rav Ovadia Yosef. News agencies around the world covered Rav Ovadia’s passing, and recorded the highlights of the life of this great rabbi, political leader, and social revolutionary.
Few articles, however, lend more than a sentence to Rav Ovadia’s most remarkable and enduring achievement – his mastery of every area of Torah, and the dozens of volumes of Halacha that he published. Congregants and students around the world are surely asking their rabbis – Who was Rav Ovadia?
Olami Resources and the Thinking Gemara series are proud to present rabbis and educators around the world with a sample of Rav Ovadia’s Torah greatness – and a tool to help students experience the Torah of this giant. In the same style of our NLE Thinking Gemara classes, we’ve prepared a Teacher’s Guide and a Student handout of an exciting shiur on an interesting and unusual contemporary shaila: Tzaar Baalei Chaim – Is it Permitted to Watch a Bullfight?
The shiur is a tour through a teshuva of Rav Ovadia, a chance to highlight the applicability of the Torah’s wisdom to all facets of modern life, and a great way to highlight the Torah’s sensitive attitude towards animals. As a bonus, the teshuva includes a nice section about visiting zoos.
